Sassy Radio Guest, Cozy Friedman

Founder of “Cozy Kids” salons in NYC and author of the new book, “Cozy’s Complete Guide to Girls’ Hair”, Cozy Friedman joined Wendy Hanson on The Sassy Ladies’ blog talk radio show.  She will be a guest on tomorrow’s “Today Show”, Thursday, March 31st.  Cozy shared her start-up story, and provides a great example of how to grow your revenue by diversifying your products and services.

Cozy Friedman started Cozy’s Cuts, a hair salon in New York City, which was opened just for children.  The salon provides a kid friendly environment including; entertainment, toys, hair products and experienced stylists.   Cozy was able to turn a disappointing experience for both parent and child, into something to look forward to. Meg Ryan and Kelly Ripa are among her celebrity clientele.
Cozy got started by simply listening to what people wanted.  Before she had children of her own, she heard what a struggle it was to take young kids to get their hair cut.  In order to understand what it was going to take to start a successful kids’ salon, Cozy put a lot of effort into understanding the market.  She worked in clothing and toy stores and also become a licensed barber which gave her the knowledge she needed to develop her business plan. She struggled to get her first space – several landlords thought her business would survive just cutting kids’ hair.

Once “Cozy’s Cuts” opened, it was busy from day one.  Cozy saw a great opportunity to develop a market that had yet to be reached. She was able to build upon her business and incorporate a hair care line, “So Cozy Hair Care”, as well as a book, “Cozy’s Complete Guide to Girl’s Hair.”

NOTE – This book has become a staple in the Girasole household.  My daughter (2nd from left) hated having her hair done, (dare I say because I was not good at doing hair?) When Cozy’s book arrived, she and her friends dug into it, and had so much fun picking out styles. We did a sleepover, and I actually could follow the instructions easily, and – lo and behold – their hairstyles came out great!  We all love this book. Some other moms have bought it on Amazon as well. If you have a young daughter who has a head of hair, definitely check this book out!

BUSINESS TIP:  We love her multiple revenue streams – if you listen carefully to your customer’s needs, you can find ways to diversify your income.
